Bob Izard talks to congregation about the interrelationship of all parts of the world

Members of First Church, along with others, have become increasingly concerned about our impact on the environment as both a moral issue and a practical matter. Our church has hosted a public viewing of the film “An Inconvenient Truth”? and our senior pastor Geordie Campbell preached a sermon on our stewardship responsibility towards all of God’s creation (see Sermons, Sept. 30, 2007 — “Touch the Earth Lightly”?).

From these beginnings, our Service and Outreach committee has been exploring how we, as church members and as a church community, can protect God’s creation for future generations - our children and children’s children.

Practical tips are offered in each monthly Tidings newsletter, church members have been encouraged to adopt energy saving light bulbs and to sign up for the Clean Energy Option offered by our electric company. Through the Service & Outreach Committee, our church has joined the CT Interfaith Power and Light Company and a team of church members is being assembled to take a their STEM seminar training. After training, the team will perform an energy audit of our church and take steps to reduce our impact on the environment, helping to protect the Earth for future generations.
Ever since the church viewed the film, Inconvenient Truth, First Church has been concerned with the practical and moral implications that taking care of the earth requires. Joining with other churches in the area, the Service and Outreach committee is informing the Congregation about changing to LED light bulbs and alternate energy generation. Practical tips are offered in the monthly newsletter, Tidings. The Church is considering an energy audit of its own buildings.
