Mission Trip

A MOUNTAIN-TOP EXPERIENCE

In April, 2007, First Church took a mission trip to the Appalachian people in Harlan, Kentucky.

Adults and teenagers traveled by van to Harlan, where they lived in the community and got to know the people of Harlan and the unique culture of this area. They worked on construction, clearing and restoring housing, using their hands and hearts for a week of work experiences The sponsor of this mission trip was COAP which is a nonprofit, ecumenical housing construction and repair organization.

The cost for materials and lodging was $195 per person. Food and transportation $100. Participants in the mission trip worked together on a fundraiser and sold stock. By doing this, the church family and community became involved in this meaningful endeavor of service and outreach. Most expenses were covered with these efforts. Scholarships were available.

After they returned, full of enthusiasm and wonder, the group gave a power point presentation to the Congregation, sharing the wonderful experiences they had on this trip.

Mission trips are taken every year, usually during school vacation in the spring. Some are local, others are further afield and in 2006 the group went to a small town in Mexico.
