Hunger Fighter team serves at Loaves and Fishes

 

SERVICE
AND OUTREACH AT FIRST CHURCH

There are countless
ways to get involved in the outreach work of First Church. Whether you want to
serve hot meals to your neighbors or build houses for those who desperately
need them, your hands are needed here! These are some of the organizations that
First Church members actively support:

Covenant to Care provides a chance to impact the lives of families and children at risk
through First Church?s relationship with an area social
worker. Many families in the Hartford region lack many of the basic
essentials that most of us take for granted. Food, clothing, furniture and
other items are donated and collected by "First Church Mitten Drive? has been a successful way for our
congregation to share the Christmas spirit through donations of mittens, warm
coats, scarves and other items that help families get through the cold winter

families in need. Our Christmas season ?

Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent, affordable
houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. First Church has had a long association with this
national organization and has helped to build several homes in the Hartford area over the past twenty years.
Our church is very active in providing leadership, money and time to this
worthwhile group, and has one of the largest work teams in the area. All you
need to know how to do is volunteer to help. Construction knowledge is not a

Loaves and Fishes is a local soup kitchen that provides warm meals and a safe place to eat
for the hungry people of Hartford. First Church volunteers work with Loaves and
Fishes staff to serve a meal once a month for people needing more than the
street can provide.

On the fourth Tuesday of each month a group of women and men
from First Church go to Immanuel Congregational
Church where they serve the food from 11:30 to 12:45 p.m. from 100 to 150 of the homeless and
the hungry. Known as the First Church
Hunger Fighters, these dedicated volunteers have been given special recognition
recently by the Loaves and Fishes staff. .

First Church Office. Teams of volunteers in the church
office and the library help with mailings, especially Tidings, assemble Sunday
Bulletins and do simple but absolutely necessary clerical tasks. This volunteer work frees up our hard working
paid staff.

Food Baskets.? At each entry door
to the church there are food baskets for
donations to the South Street Food Pantry
which serves many needy families in
Hartford
