Who can go? This trip is open to any ninth through twelfth graders, as well as our faithful volunteer advisors.
When will we go? Sunday, July 9 to Saturday, July 15, 2017
What organization will we work with? We will be working with Epworth Project in the Greater New Orleans areas. Epworth Project is a non-profit that rallies volunteers from around the country to help local families with home repairs. A barrage of powerful hurricanes over the past decade, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Isaac in 2012, have destroyed thousands of homes, and there is still plenty of work to do.
What kind of work will we do? This will be a labor intensive trip and could involve a variety of home repair tasks. For example, a week might include gutting, painting, installing flooring, and building a handicap ramp. Technical experience is appreciated but not required.
We will also engage the important relational work of mission. Youth will build relationships with local residents and become acquainted with the socioeconomic issues that affect the region.
Where will we stay? We will stay at Epworth Project, which hosts groups of up to 54 people in their dorm style housing. We will travel, live, and work with youth from Rocky Hill Congregational Church and Flagg Road UCC.
What is the cost? Through fundraising and the generous support of First Church, we are limiting the cost to approximately $600 per participant. A $100 deposit is due on December 18, 2016. Further financial assistance is available. Please talk to Pastor Elliott for further details.
How will we get there? We will fly to Louisiana and use large rental vans to travel around during our week.
When are the Mission Trip meetings? To hear more about the Mission Trip, come to the parent and youth meeting on Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the Youth Room. Participants must be present for mandatory youth mission meetings and regularly attend Youth Group sessions.
Can I bring a friend? YES!!!!! Friends are highly encouraged.
