How do I pray and what do I say
dear God of mercy and sadness?

I have no language but shock and tears
as brothers and sisters are murdered –
and at prayer – a hatred so vicious and ugly
as to break and wound every heart.

Give me strength to stand with and for
the grieving families and lost loved ones
in Charleston – and with the many whose
safety is shattered by such senseless craziness.

But also steer me beyond, to use my voice
and my hands, my resources and my anger
to work for a world and a culture that
does not, will not allow this anymore.

Move me, and everyone who reads this,
to cry out “ENOUGH” loudly and urgently
so that any comfort found, any healing
experienced, will be accompanied by change.

How do we pray and what do we say
dear God of mercy and sadness?
