You are invited to attend a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in the First Church Auditorium to hear a reading of Rev. Susan Izard's paper, "My Darling Mother: A Soldier's Letters Home." The paper is about Susan's father's experience in the Battle of the Bulge and as a prisoner of war. Susan has recorded the letters and telegrams her father wrote to his mother from Europe and reconstructed the history surrounding them. Susan's father Lieutenant C. Newton Schenck III, was a forward observer for the 590th artillery of the 106th Army. He was captured in the Schnee Effel on December 19, 1944. He was liberated from prison camp on April 6, 1945 and returned to America, after recuperating in an American Hospital in France, in June 1945. The paper focuses on the last six months of WWII. Susan Izard and Geordie Campbell will present the paper. There will be a discussion about World War II after the paper is presented. Members of First Church and their guests are invited. Lunch reservations are requested by April 22. Please RSVP to the church office by calling 233-9605. There will be a free will offering to cover the cost of the food.
