What’s new at the John P. Webster Library?

We have many new books on the shelves. Come in and see for yourself! We are open 9-12 Sundays, and 9-5 Monday – Thursday. Here’s a peek at some recent acquisitions.

The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy by Jim Wallis

“It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith―specifically the ‘Christian’ in White Christian Nationalism―and invite all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. Wallis explores six iconic texts at the heart of what genuine biblical faith means and what Jesus, in the gospels, has called us to do. It is time to ask anew: do we believe these teachings or not?” (publisher). Wallis is the director of the Center on Faith and Justice at Georgetown University, and the author of several books on contemporary Christianity.

The Cat Man of Aleppo by Karim Shamsi-Basha and Irene Latham. Illustrated by Yuko Shimizu

The true story of Mohammad Alaa Aljaleel, who in the midst of the Syrian Civil War, courageously offered safe haven to Aleppo’s abandoned cats. With compassion for the difficult choices people have to make when fleeing from war, the book combines stories of kindness to animals with scenes of community building (socialjusticebooks.org). Picture book, preschool – grade 3.

James by Percival Everett

“This retelling of Huckleberry Finn not only makes the runaway the narrator, but it imagines him as a kind of Frederick Douglass: that is, possessed of a capacious mind, a mastery of language, a willingness to fight, and a reckless burning to write his own story” (msnbc.com).

God’s Big Picture Bible Storybook: 140 Connecting Bible Stories of God’s Faithful Promises

by N. T. Wright. Illustrated by Helena Perez Garcia

A Bible storybook from one of the world’s top Bible scholars. “My grandson loved the colorful illustrations – simple, yet detailed and realistic. Each story had just the right amount of information for a young child, contained on one page per story with one illustration. Many stories are connected to other stories in the Bible with colorful endnotes, offering more information for an older child, or even adults. The entire book has the foundation of a leading Bible Scholar, N.T. Wright, who presents the content as ‘God’s big story.’ The book includes six maps and a detailed index” (Amazon Reader Review).
